Membership Information
Founded in 1954, the American Paraplegia Society (APS) is dedicated to improving the quality of medical care delivered to persons with spinal cord impairment (SCI). Spinal cord medicine is recognized as a discipline which encompasses many components of specialized care. In view of this diversity, one of the major functions of APS is to foster the interchange of ideas in both clinical and basic science.
APS is organized and functions exclusively for educational purposes. Its goals are to advance SCI patient care, promote research related to SCI, and provide a forum for the review of scientific findings.
MISSION: Continuing education is fundamental to professional growth, excellence in clinical practice, and optimal patient outcome. Physicians and researchers participate in continuing medical education (CME) to reinforce, improve and expand their analytical, diagnostic, and therapeutic skills. CME opportunities are integral activities of the APS.
In fulfilling this mandate, APS convenes an annual scientific conference to report state-of-the-art techniques, disseminate information about scientific research and technological breakthroughs, discuss advances in research and the latest standards for achieving optimal health care, including rehabilitation and lifetime care of individuals with SCI. It is a direct result of this exchange of scientific data that research is advanced and encouraged. Examining data arising from scientific investigations and assessing their impact on clinical care are essential to establishing standards of care, adopting new diagnostic techniques, and treatment protocols to provide cost-effective quality care.
APS is recognized and certified by the Internal Revenue Service as an organization meeting the requirements of a 501(c)(3) organization. Any contribution or donation to the American Paraplegia Society is tax deductible.
