The APS meeting anchored the North American Spinal Cord Injury Conference and Disability Expo hosted by the United Spinal Association (USA). The disability expo consisted of the annual meetings of three well established societies, the American Paraplegia Society (APS), the American Association of Spinal Cord Injury Psychologists and Social Workers (AASCIPSW), and the American Association of Spinal Cord Injury Nurses (AASCIN) as well as the annual meeting of two new groups. We were proud to include n new groups this year, including physical and occupational therapists focused on the care of spinal cord injury patients as well as a large “consumer’s group” consisting of individuals with spinal cord injury/disease and their families. In all, there were 842 health-care professionals that attended the Disability Expo. Two hundred thirty six specifically registered for the APS meeting and of these, 105 were affiliated with Veteran Administration Hospitals throughout the country. In addition to the 842 health-care professionals, 350 individuals with spinal cord injury/disease were also in attendance. The 2007 APS Conference was an outstanding success. The sessions consisted of a balance between cutting-edge SCI research and the latest clinical care protocols addressing both out-patient and in-patient care. The clinical issues focused on the care of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), bracing use after spine surgery, male infertility, autonomic dysreflexia, and global aspects of SCI care. The research issues focused on stem cells and their role in SCI repair, pharmacological approaches to augment naturally occurring recovery after SCI, and combination therapies to improve repair of the injured spinal cord. There was also a session presented by representatives from the National Institutes of Health on NIH funding priorities and the types of research grants that are available for both clinicians and basic scientists interested in SCI research. In addition to the above, there were three early-morning focus sessions and 40 poster presentations on various topics in spinal cord medicine.
